A little while ago, I noticed that the postbox in my neighbourhood suddenly turned gold. Postboxes are traditionally red, so it was quite striking. It wasn’t until a few days later that I found out that Royal Mail has painted a postbox gold for every GB Olympic gold medal winner, sited in their home town or suburb, and they will do the same for Paralympic winners too. Our local one is situated on the far side of the train station entrance, so I keep forgetting to take a photo. This evening I finally remembered:
Quite a nice bit of something shiny in a slice of London suburbia. I’m not sure how long it will stay gold though; you can already see some of the red paint underneath peeking through. You can keep track of all the postboxes around the country here.
Interestingly, there has been a bit of a kerfuffle about people taking the idea in to their own hands and blinging up postboxes themselves. Nothing like a bit of Olympic spirit, eh?
